CESSPIT EMPTYING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a cesspit?

A cesspit is a sealed, fully-enclosed tank that collects and stores sewage. Unlike a septic tank, it does not have an outlet and doesn’t treat the sewage. If you plan to install a new one you will need planning permission and building regulations approval.

Cesspits are usually buried underground, so won’t take up room on your property – apart from one manhole which is needed for access. It is important to have Drainforce regularly check and empty your cesspit so that it doesn't become "out of sight, out of mind."

Can cesspits overflow or leak?

Yes, a cesspit can overflow or leak. Overflowing or leaking cesspits are an offence under the 1936 Public Health act. If it pollutes a water course, the Environment Agency may take legal action.

Why do cesspits smell?

A cesspit can smell because it has to allow for sewage gasses to vent and exit the tank. They need to be checked regularly so that you avoid overflows and know when they need emptying.

Can I clear a cesspit myself?

No. Do not try to fix your cesspit yourself and do not enter the tank as gases could suffocate you.

A cesspit must be emptied regularly by a registered waste carrier, who will dispose of the contents in a specialised waste disposal site.

We are trained, experienced and have the correct specialist equipment required. If a cesspit leaks, please call us so we can resolve the issue.

How will I know when to empty my cesspit?

These are the main signs that your cesspit needs emptying:

  • Overflowing manholes or puddles around your tank
  • Odours and smells in the vicinity of the tank are a sign that the tank is full
  • Slow drainage sinks or facilities not working, such as toilets
  • Drains backing up
